How to open an MSG file without Outlook

    Three steps. Nothing to install.

    1

    Choose the .msg file

Drop it on the box above or pick it. Files saved from Outlook, attached to another email or sent to you by a colleague all work.

    2

    Read the email

It opens as Outlook shows it: subject, sender, recipients, date and the formatted message, with pictures inside it.

    3

    Save the attachments

Click an attachment to save it to your computer. Nothing is installed and nothing is uploaded.

    What is an MSG file?

One Outlook email, saved as a file.

Outlook for Windows creates a .msg file when you drag an email to the desktop or a folder, or choose File › Save As. The file holds the whole message: its text and formatting, the sender and recipients, the dates and every attachment.

The format belongs to Outlook, so a Mac, a Chromebook or a PC without Outlook has no program that opens it, and the new Outlook for Windows does not open saved .msg files either. That is why lawyers, accountants and support teams so often receive files they cannot read.

This viewer reads the format itself, in your browser, so any computer can open them. Have a whole folder of them? MSG to PST puts them into one Outlook data file.

    Private by design

Your mail stays on your computer.

The viewer is our mail engine running inside this browser tab. It reads the file from your disk, and no copy of your mail is ever made on a server. It also opens Outlook PST and OST files, and any of the other formats, whichever page you drop them on.

    FAQ

    MSG Viewer questions.

    What is an MSG file?

An MSG file is a single email saved by Microsoft Outlook. It contains the message text, the sender and recipients, the dates and the attachments, in Outlook's own file format.

How do I open an MSG file on a Mac?

Drop it on the viewer above in Chrome, Edge, Safari or Firefox. It opens in the browser tab with its attachments, without Outlook or any app to install.

Can I open an MSG file without Outlook?

Yes. The viewer reads the MSG format directly, so Outlook is not needed on any computer, including Windows PCs that only have the new Outlook.

    Is my MSG file uploaded?

No. The engine runs inside your browser tab and reads the file from your disk. Nothing is sent to a server, and it keeps working with Wi-Fi switched off.

    Can I save the attachments?

Yes. Click any attachment under the message to save it. Pictures placed inside the email are shown in the message itself.

Can it open meetings and contacts saved as .msg?

Yes, it shows their main details. Calendar fields such as the meeting time are not laid out the way Outlook shows them.

I have hundreds of MSG files. Can I put them into Outlook?

Yes. MSG to PST combines them into one PST file that Outlook can open, and checks the result before you save it.
