How to open an EML file

    Three steps. Nothing to install.

    1

    Choose the .eml file

Drop it on the box above or pick it. Emails downloaded from Gmail, Outlook on the web, Thunderbird or Apple Mail all work.

    2

    Read the email

The formatted message opens with its subject, sender, recipients and date. Pictures from the internet stay blocked until you allow them.

    3

    Save the attachments

Click an attachment to save it. Emails attached to the message can be saved and opened here too.

    What is an EML file?

The standard email file, readable anywhere.

An .eml file is one email in the Internet's standard message format (RFC 5322): the headers, the text and HTML versions of the message and the attachments, all in one text file. Most mail programs can save one: Gmail's Download message, Thunderbird, Apple Mail, Windows Mail and Outlook on the web.

Opening one is harder than it should be. Double-clicking hands it to whatever mail app the computer has, which may want an account first, or to a text editor that shows raw encoded text. This viewer decodes it properly: character sets, quoted-printable and base64, inline images and attached messages.

Keeping a folder of saved emails? EML to PST turns them into one PST for Outlook, and the guide to mail file formats explains how EML, MSG, MBOX and PST differ.

    Private by design

Your mail stays on your computer.

The viewer is our mail engine running inside this browser tab. It reads the file from your disk, and no copy of your mail is ever made on a server. It also opens Outlook PST and OST files, and any of the other formats, whichever page you drop them on.

    FAQ

    EML Viewer questions.

    What is an EML file?

An EML file is a single email saved in the standard Internet message format. Gmail, Thunderbird, Apple Mail, Windows Mail and Outlook on the web can all save emails as .eml files.

How do I open an EML file without Outlook?

Drop it on the viewer above. It opens in your browser on Windows, Mac, Linux or a Chromebook, with no mail account or app needed.

    Is my EML file uploaded?

No. The engine runs inside your browser tab and reads the file from your disk. Nothing is sent to a server.

Why are some pictures not shown?

Emails can load pictures from the internet to track when they are read. The viewer blocks them until you click Show images for that message. Pictures stored inside the email always show.

Can I save the attachments from an EML file?

Yes. Click any attachment to save it. An email attached to the email is saved as its own .eml file, which you can open here as well.

How do I get an email from Gmail as an EML file?

Open the email in Gmail, click the three-dot menu next to Reply and choose Download message. The browser saves it as an .eml file.

Can I put my EML files into Outlook?

Yes. EML to PST combines a folder of .eml files into one PST file that Outlook can open, keeping the folder structure.
